Nelson Mandela was born as Nelson Rolihalla Mandela on 18 July 1918 in Transkei, South Africa. His mother was Nonqaphi Nosekeni and father was Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela.

Nelson Mandela 1918 to 2013 dedicated his life fighting for human rights and believed that everyone had the potential to make the world a better place. He joined the African National Congress in 1944 when he helped form the ANC Youth League.

In 1993, Nelson Mandela and Frederik Willem de Klerk were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their work on the peaceful end of apartheid and laying the foundation for a new democracy for South Africa.

Mandela retired from politics in 1999 but remained a world advocate for peace until his death on 5 December 2013. Mandela died at his home in Johannesburg
